Dye Sublimation prINTs

Our Dye Sublimation Prints are one-off custom - or bespoke - prints that can be made of almost any image of mine; these dye sublimation prints on aluminum can be produced to your own exact specifications.

These are one of only two types of prints that I do not make myself. Instead, I work with a studio near Providence, Rhode Island, that is known to be the best in the country at what they do.

Their workmanship is extraordinary….the prints are sublime. If they were not, I would not be so utterly in thrall with them. I wish that you could see them here in the gallery, in person. If that’s not possible, I hope these few images will help you better envision the power and presence of these prints.

Dye Sublimation Prints are very often frameless, with the print surface floating approximately 3/4” out from the wall, but exquisite custom framing is also available.

Dye Sublimation Prints are an open edition and are archival to 65+ years as tested by Wilhelm Imaging Research under intense, accelerated aging conditions. They are hand signed and titled on the back of the print.

These prints are, immodestly, gorgeous and we hope that you will come have a look.

The Dye Sublimation process

OVERVIEW: DYE-SUBLIMATION ONTO ALUMINUM

Sublimation onto aluminum is a process of infusing dyes into a sheet of pre-treated aluminum via heat transfer. Sublimation is the process of going from a solid to a gas, back to a solid, skipping the liquid state. Once the dyes submerge underneath the surface, the process is complete and permanent.

IN MORE DETAIL: THE PROCESS

The image is first printed onto a paper transfer sheet via inkjet technology. The paper is then adhered to a sheet of pre-treated aluminum which is placed in a heat press. While being subjected to extreme heat and pressure, the dyes from the transfer paper turn into a gas, are pressed into the surface of the metal, and then solidify into the treated aluminum. This is where the sublimation heat transfer occurs. Once out of the press, the aluminum cools and the process is complete with no additional coating or lamination applied after this. As the dyes cool they are permanently infused beneath the surface of the metal substrate.

CONTEMPORARY LOOK

Your print can be frameless, suspended/floated ¾” off the wall by using an inset backing, or you can order it in a traditional or contemporary float frame.

WIPEABLE ARTWORK

No need to worry about fingerprints or blemishes on the surface. A microfiber cloth and household cleaner can be used to clean dye-sub prints.

SCRATCH RESISTANT

Dyes are infused beneath the exterior coating through sublimation. This makes it more durable than traditional paper and canvas imaging because it can’t be scratched or peeled off the surface.

LARGE FORMAT

Largest single panel can be produced at 48 x 96". Multiple panels can be joined and braced together in the back to create larger installations.

LIGHT WEIGHT

Though extremely rigid and durable, the recycled aluminum is lightweight and easy to hang.  A 40x60" panel with an aluminum float backing weighs approximately 13lbs. The aluminum used by the studio is 90% recycled.

NO GLASS

After the heat transfer process, the artwork is completed. No additional UV Acrylic or glass is needed to protect the artwork.

In March of 2020, COVID was coming on hard and I thought that maybe a weekly 'hug from Maine' would be welcome, so I started sending these emails every Sunday morning….and I’m still doing that. These are usually short stories about what's behind the images, and people seemed to really enjoy getting them. I discovered that I love sharing in this manner and I so hope that you will enjoy them yourself.
