It is true that creative work should speak for itself, but a few years ago, after being asked for the thousandth time, “What are the sheep doing in that boat?,” I decided to write the story behind Pentecost. In the course of that process I discovered that I very much enjoy sharing “the rest of the story,” and have since penned further reflections upon certain images.

My purpose in these stories is simply to relate what was going through my head when I made the images. In certain cases, time has given me the luxury of enhanced perspective, which hopefully serves the narratives well.

I’ve learned that sharing the undercurrents of metaphor in many of these gives me a special gratification. Who knows, you too may learn or see something unexpected in the stories…I know I have.

A printed and signed story will accompany every print – no matter what size – of each of the following photographs.
